Speaker's biography
Dr. Savita Singh, former director of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (The national Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi), has a Ph.D. in contemporary environmental crisis and a Master’s degree in archaeology and Indian culture. She has held several positions in the Government of India, including member, governing body of India Council of Cultural Relations (Ministry of External Affairs) and member of Committee on Educational and Socially Responsible Film (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting).
Her major publication is Satyagraha, published by the publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broad-Casting, Government of India. She is a member of prestigious Associations including the General Assembly of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Jury Member of the Committee on Educational and Socially Responsible Films and Member of the Governing Council of the Nelson Mandela Centre for the Study of Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia.

Dr. Singh reiterated that Gandhi succeeded in transforming political activity with his intense faith in Truth and Nonviolence into mass movements, which he described as Satyagraha. On the occasion of 9/11, Dr. Singh said that we vividly remember what happened in the United States. However, Dr. Singh contended that 9/11 in 1906 was the day when Gandhi crafted the programme of Satyagraha although the christening happened a little later.
The life and times of Mahatma Gandhi neatly spreads over three centuries. Born in the later half of the 19th century, he develops a system in the 20th century by using his self as a laboratory where he experiments with Truth as a pure scientist, finds solutions for the major problems now confronting humanity in the 21st century. As a visionary he had foreseen these situations coming through the outcome of the follies of mankind committed throughout the 20th Century. His same voice cautioned us to go only this far and not beyond, slow the pace and ponder carefully before you take the next step.
