Dr. Narayan in his talk reiterated the need for recognizing that equality is something that must be cherished. Moral neutrality to inequity by birth or otherwise is a very dangerous thing because it breeds violence. The mistrust that is now endemic in our society and our societies across the world, whether hierarchical mistrust or horizontal mistrust on account of perceived differences, must give way to trust. We must recognize that there is a common fate binding all of us.
We need to be driven by the consciousness that injustice of any kind to anyone anywhere would today or tomorrow have an impact on our lives. If you continue to think that you will not be affected by injustice to some person in some instance, there would be nothing left to be done when that injustice reaches you. Injustice anywhere is a threat to everybody everywhere. How do we intend on leading this life as individuals and as a society? At the end of the day, that defines us as individuals, as societies, as nations, indeed as the human race.
